Linoleum or lino is available in a range of patterns, embedded designs and colours. Also known as resilient flooring, the material is very durable and low-maintenance. Though often confused with the synthetic vinyl, linoleum is very different in terms of composition, maintenance and installation. 

Durable and sturdy
The sturdy linoleum generally has a warranty period that can range from 25 to 40 years – often outrunning the lifespan of vinyl floors. A layer of limestone dust is sometimes added to the mixture, which makes the floor harder and helps in longevity. This further ensures protection from scratches and prevents fading of the colour from exposure to extreme sunlight. The prolonged lifespan of linoleum also makes the material cost-effective in the long run.

All natural and hypoallergenic
Linoleum is made from all natural, renewable materials such as linseed oil, pine resins, wood flour and cork powder. Using cork powder provides bounce and resilience to the floor. The biodegradable material doesn’t add as much to the carbon footprint either. Linoleum is hypoallergenic and does not emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) – gases that have adverse health effects.

Easy maintenance
Another benefit of linoleum is that it’s low maintenance. Just the regular sweeping and mopping with water keeps the floor clean. The colour in good ‘inlaid’ linoleum penetrates through all the layers of the material – which also helps to camouflage minor damage from scrapes or scratches.

Available in different styles
Usually linoleum comes in three regular formats:

• Sheet linoleum: These are jumbo-sized rolls for covering large floors, such as living rooms. The width of the standard floor roll is usually between 6 and 12 feet.

• Tile linoleum: The tile or plank version is similar to ceramic, porcelain and stone tiles but is less expensive and easier to install. The tiles usually come in 12-inch and 18-inch squares but may vary with the manufacturer.

• Click-and-lock flooring: While the typical sheet and tile linoleum is generally glued to the floor, this one snaps into place on a floor frame and therefore does not require any additional adhesive. It is specifically designed to be used as part of a floating floor system and comes in tiles or planks for easy installation.

 Adds to the aesthetics
The linoleum flooring offers plenty of variety in terms of colours and patterns, from the subtle to the vividly expressive. One can opt for a classic faux marbled look or go bolder with beautiful motifs. Since the material is easy to cut, you can combine different patterns and designs to create a bespoke look.

Cushioned and low-noise
Being a resilient flooring option, linoleum compresses naturally and bounces back when walked on, giving a slight cushioning effect. This makes it ideal for children’s rooms and reduces the risk of injury from the impact of falling. Also, walking on this surface is relatively less noisy, thanks to the cushioning.

Water and slip resistant
Linoleum features a basic water resistance that makes it a smart pick for kids running around in wet shoes (or even pets), and for the occasional splashes in the bathroom and kitchen.
