She's spent more than a decade crafting swoon-worthy closets for celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Reese Witherspoon, Olivia Culpo, Tyra Banks, Khloe Kardashian, and Ray Romano. But she just completed what's likely one of her biggest projects to date—designing her own closet space. Actually, in her case, a master closet, along with a separate dressing room and area for her handbags.

Lisa Adams, the CEO of LA Closet Design, intended to design a simple, standard master closet in her Los Angeles home. That quickly evolved into converting a room into her master closet, and then adding a dressing room plus a stylish area for her enviable handbag collection. The project took almost two years to complete, but it was well worth the wait. "It's been a long time coming," Adams says. "I really wanted it to coincide with my personal taste."

The picture-perfect, elegant space is centered around a neutral palette that's reflected throughout other areas of her home. It boasts luxurious touches, ranging from retailer-style hanging rods and a ​Hermes ceiling wallpaper​ to a custom Portola paint color​ called "Closet Cashmere"—created just for Lisa—and a striking geometric LED brass light fixture. "I love being in a space that is completely curated and purged," Adams says. "It's really not for show. It's where I want to pick out and have my favorite items and get excited about getting ready or packing for a trip."

While Adams' well-designed closet was not easy to execute, there are practical decorating tips to steal from this designer-to-the-stars. Here are some of her pointers for designing the closet of your dreams—one that favors both functions and style.

Purge, Purge, Purge

A closet should be filled with your necessities. "You don't need 10 sweaters that are falling over or hanging so stuffed that you can't put anything back," Adams says. "Going into your closet and getting dressed shouldn't be a stressful affair."

Keep Drawers Organized

Consider using drawer inserts or organizers. "Whenever you open up a drawer and it's organized, with partitions and cubbies and everything in its place, everybody goes 'oh my gosh', she says."

Consider Blush Pink

According to Adams, blush pink is all the rage among her celebrity client base. "People think blush pink looks great on social media, especially Pinterest," Adams says. "A white closet doesn't feel as custom as blush pink and it still feels neutral."

Maximize Space

Even if you live in a small space, there's still room to infuse a touch of luxury into your closet. "Maximize the height when you don't have the luxury of a full room," Adams advises. "Use all of the depths so that nothing is stuck behind. For instance, you can do a double or triple row of shoes or a double or triple stack of jeans, but just make sure you are still able to see everything."

Add Seating

According to Adams, incorporating seating in closets wasn't popular 12 years ago, but that's no longer the case. “It wasn't a place to hang out and relax in, but now seating makes it feel like a legitimate room and makes the whole dressing experience feel so much better." 

Opt for Floor-to-Ceiling Shelving

Displaying shoes in a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit is one of the best ways to give the space a more sophisticated, Khloe Kardashian-closet feel. "Arrange shoes by style and by color and you can even put wallpaper on the back of it," Adams says.
