CALL me sexist but, for the most part, interiors are a woman's domain. The temptation for many women is to embrace a more feminine style, but if you share your space (or are hoping to), an overly feminine style can be off-putting for men.

So how do you create a romantic space that embraces the feminine and masculine? A space where both men and women are comfortable? I asked internationally respected interior designer Miv Watts.

"Personally I think I have quite a strong masculine side, I certainly don't go for the flounces and frills in life, or overly decorating a space,” says Miv. "But I would suggest incorporating a strong piece of furniture into a room, something Georgian would be perfect. It was such a fine century for great proportions.

"Another suggestion that I personally like to do is to collect quirky, scientific things, masculine pieces, then making a cabinet out of these found curiosities. I do think it's fair to say that most men feel comfortable with a bit of boy stuff around.

"An obvious suggestion, but worth repeating, is lighting,” adds Miv. "I never use anything but subdued lighting, and I avoid using any overhead lighting, unless it is a spectacular old chandelier that is on a dimmer switch.”

Miv says bathrooms are another space that can morph from functional to romantic. "A bathroom that can open out to the rainforest or has a view of the mountains, or sea - any outlook to nature is wildly romantic. And of course, fragrant candles and champagne always add to the ambience.”
