Patterns That Will Make You Go OMG

A smartly placed pattern – on furnishings, walls, flooring or furniture – can make all the difference in a room. Here we look at five top designs that have the ability to influence not just the look but even the ambience of a space.

Polka dots

The white dots on the bright pink rug create a harmonious symmetry. You probably can’t get a bolder pattern than the huge, in-your-face polka dots seen on the wallpaper in the right image. I like how the pink pillow mirrors the polka design, though on a smaller surface. Since the walls are so bold and dominating, the rest of the furnishings are kept white. Who wouldn’t love to camp here?

Houndstooth

This pattern has a very contemporary appeal and adds a subtle sense of style and sophistication to a space.

The houndstooth upholstered armchairs give momentum to this living room sporting solid colors in the leather sofa, the neutral flooring and grey walls.

In the second image, a houndstooth mosaic tile backsplash peeks out from the kitchen and provides dynamic visual impact in the predominantly woody space.

Suzani

The fiery red bedroom allows the pattern to take prominence. Solid red and brown (and of course the white brick walls) provide a nice base for the circular suzani discs and to make a statement. There’s also something cosy and comforting about this design – it has an ethnic touch to it and reminds me of Indian prints and patterns.

Suzani leaps to the eye in this entire room’s fabric palette, too, providing contrast to the otherwise soft scheme. If I were lucky enough to get hold of such treasure, I’d start with the bold suzani-upholstered chair and then arrange the room around it, picking the rug, drapes, and sofa fabrics to go with its rich appeal.

Ikat

Imagine the bathroom without the wallpaper, with just the chandelier and fancy mirror – it would look sophisticated but without any character. The Ikat wallpaper brings just the right dose of color, pattern, texture and uniqueness to the space.

The space is ornamented with ikat seating, contrasted with printed cushions and highlighted with a dainty pendant.

Geometric

Here is a a pattern-heavy living room where the focal points are the flooring and the art work. To ensure that the space doesn’t seem too overwhelming, neutral accessories and seating are chosen.

The geometric design running along the entire length of the staircase on the left lends drama to the area.
