How to care for your jewellery in monsoon

FT NEWS

With rains, comes a lot of trouble. We often have to secure our expensive pieces of clothing and accessories properly. During the rainy season, silver jewellery is more likely to get oxidised and take a darker color, due to humidity. Here's how you can protect your baubles.
1. Keep your jewellery well packed in an air-tight box or zip locks. It will stay intact.
2. You can rub your plain silver jewellery with Colgate powder and shine it up using a soft cotton cloth.
3. A silver duster is a good way to clean up your jewellery in good intervals of time.
4. We have seen pure silver jewellery turning bluish-black in the rainy season if left open for a longer time. You can clean it up using baking soda and aluminium foil. Here's how you can do it.

- Line a bowl with aluminium foil.

- Pour some amount of hot water. Quantity should be enough to dip the jewellery well.

-Add equal amounts of salt and baking soda.

-Place the jewellery in the solution, making sure that it is touching the aluminium.
- Keep it for at least 5-7 minutes. You'll see the jewellery getting cleaned up. Rinse and dry. Apply it to plain silver jewellery only and not with stones.
5. Damp weather leads to jewellery catching dust and dirt quickly, hence it's important to wash the gold ornaments with soapy water if kept in open to avoid the dust.
6. Further care should be taken to store the jewellery properly in a box which has a soft interior, but not velvet. This helps in keeping the moisture away further keeping the jewellery, the gemstones safe from scratches and maintaining its sheen.
7. In case the jewellery gets wet in rain, the best way is to dry it with a soft fabric and blow dry the jewellery before storing it.
