7 Ways to Create More Space Within the Same Footprint

FT NEWS

They say good things come in small packages – and what can prove this better than a home with a compact square footage.

We’ve put together some clever space-saving solutions using multipurpose furniture pieces, vertical storage and more, so you can maximise on the space available and revel in beautiful interiors.

Fluid partitions
While walls are a convenient and recognisable architectural element that define and segregate a room, they can eat into your square footage. Fluid partitions such as curtains or even screens are a clever substitute. They are a budget-friendly, easy and non-permanent alternative to a wall or fixed partition.

Create a room within a room with freestanding accordion-style folding screens to demarcate spaces. They don’t need any kind of installation and you can move them around wherever and whenever you please. Just fold and stow them away when not required.

Built-in storage
A custom built-in storage unit can turn a boring wall into a super-functional area that cuts down clutter and looks sleek, with minimal footprint. They are easy to use, unobtrusive and pack a punch with storage. With endless design and configuration options, built-in storage works for any room of the house.

The one displayed here displays a neat grid of wall panelling, seamlessly integrating storage cabinets for everything ranging from glassware to books, and open niches for artwork and electronics.

Fold-down beds
Fold-down beds (also called Murphy or wall beds) are designed to be folded or swung into a cabinet when not in use. It helps you to make the most of the precious space, which is at a premium. Displayed here is a double bed that unfolds very neatly to provide a compact sleep zone without taking up too much floor area. This leaves the room free for other activities during the day.

Vertical storage
Vertical storage helps to efficiently utilise space without taking up any floor area. In particular, cupboards running end to end and from floor to ceiling, are a clever trick to maximise vertical storage. Having closed storage units makes it easy to organise.

Under-bed storage
Storage beds increase the functionality of the bedroom and optimise the space below the bed for storing things that are not used frequently, such as seasonal clothing, spare bedding and extra towels.

Along with storage, these beds help keep the room cleaner as they usually sit flat and prevent dust from collecting under the bed.

Multipurpose furniture
A micro home can be set up to serve macro needs with multipurpose furniture. For example, a shutter for a shallow cupboard transforms into a folding dining table (as displayed here). It can swing open, propped on frame legs, when needed. Such designs incorporate shelving units for storing plates, jars, tumblers and more.

Sliding doors
Sliding doors provide a seamless transition from one zone to another while segregating open areas or closing off rooms. Unlike hinged doors that take up room to swing open, sliding doors operate sideways. Along with small rooms, these are great for cupboards and wardrobes in cramped areas too.
