How to store and protect saris

FT NEWS

Saris are the most expensive garment in Indian wear. If stored properly, then they can last for generations. Yes, with proper care, your saris can look all-new and stand the test of time. To save your saris from damage, follow this simple guide.

Store heavy saris separately

It's best to store heavy embroidered and embellished saris separately, as they can create friction and get can get damaged easily. It's appropriate to store them in boxes, cloth bags rather than hanger. You can also flip the work-part inside to prevent any damage.

Remove stains properly

If you get a stain on the sari, you need to act fast. Gently buff away the stain and then treat it with cold water. You can even use a little bit of white vinegar, lemon juice or mild soap for darker stains.

Be cautious while ironing

If you're using an iron, then you need to be extra cautious. Check out the iron settings and use the lowest mode for saris. For extra protection, always use a press cloth or a fabric above the sari while ironing.

Washing

Not all saris are made for machine wash. General fabrics like cotton can be washed in machine easily, but for the rest, one must try gentle hand-wash only. If you unsure whether the colour will fade, do a patch test to see. If you see any colour, then it's best to get it dry cleaned only.

Change the folding

If you have any zari or silk sari, you need to change the folding of it, once in two months or so. It's best to store all saris at a dark and cool place.
