Flowers and spring go together like cheese and wine, and whilst they may not be a groundbreaking duo, the gradually warmer weather has us throwing open our French shutters and filling every vase in the house with fresh cut flowers.

In saying that, every vase is different, and part of our vast joy derived from flower-fying our home is putting on our creative hats and deciding which flowers to put in which vases.

Although we’ve been known to put flowers in empty wine bottles, vases are a pleasure in and of themselves. Here we go through our favourite vase styles of the moment, and reveal our favourite matching blooms.

GLASS WORKS

Sometimes the classics are the best. Glass is the original vase, and most people will have at least one cylindrical, plain glass vase in their home. We like to shake things up a little bit though, and are seriously lusting after coloured glass at the moment. Try a vase in a charcoal, rose or cloudy, almost-grey shade. Clear vases are great for flowers with striking stems, think lillies, irises, leaf cuttings, tulips, antharium, eucalyptus, magnolia or calla lillies.

MARBLED DREAMS

Evocative of the unfurling patterns naturally present in flowers, sprawling marble patterns are the perfect accompaniment to your bouquet. We love paring marbled vases with single-variety bouquets with intricate flowers. Peonies, wattle, anenomies, carnations, sweet pea and hydrangeas.

JAPANESE CERAMIC

It's impossible not to fall in love with japanese ceramics. Seriously. How could you not be obsessed with such simple yet intricate craftsmanship. Sleek, simple, scandi. Like your stainless steel fridge, your flush drawers and your all black wardrobe, these vases work without making too much of a fuss. The perfect accompaniment to any scandi-inspired or minimalist home, these opaque resin vases suit equally sparse flowers.

STATEMENT PIECES

Sometimes the vase needs to stand on it's own to compete with the biggest and brightest of flowers. These three vases certainly do that. Have fun matching statement vases with interesting flowers, and remember, because the vase is so eye-catching, you can get away with less flowers. Having made an almighty comeback in the last 5 years, the skinny vase is omni-present in chic interior design mags everywhere. A plus for those of us pinching-pennies, one can invest in one or two beautiful stems to fill these vases, without breaking the bank. Choose a flower with an intricate an eye-catching bloom. Think babies breath, a single lily, kangaroo's paw, orchids, antharium or a monstera cutting.

ABSTRACT ARTWORKS

These vases are artworks in and of them, and lend them beautifully to big bouquets in whites, creams, pale yellows and lilacs. Similarly, match them with some brightly coloured flowers like poppies or wildflowers to pack a punch.
