Decorate Your Fireplace For The Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to decorate your home! Break out the garland and string lights, because it’s time to decorate for the holidays. There are endless options when it comes to your Christmas decorations, but one major focus for many homeowners is the fireplace.

You can make your décor stand out here. Here are a few ideas on how you can decorate your fireplace for the holidays.

Holiday Home Decor

It’s the ideal picturesque Christmas card scene where there are beautiful holiday decorations surrounding a fireplace, making it cozy and warm. You might be wondering how you can achieve this in your own home. After all, it only happens once a year! However, among your other holiday plans, the idea of creating a perfectly decorated home might seem impossible. However, Ashley Dudich, shop owner and home blogger at All The Design, shares some assurance that it’s easier than you think to have a beautifully decorated home for the holidays.

“Decorating for the holidays doesn't have to be overwhelming or over-the-top,” she said. “There are so many ways to incorporate simple decor with just as much sparkle. Little trees tucked on a bookshelf, a bathroom counter or a tabletop are quick to set up and bring instant cozy. Clustering mercury glass candle holders can create a beautiful centerpiece that can carry you through the entire winter season. Rather than hanging every ornament on the tree, fill a few tall glass vases with vintage ball ornaments for an easy mantel refresh.”

Fireplace Safety

Before you begin adding any décor above or around the fireplace, it’s extremely important that you make sure all decorations are safe. While it’s tempting to let live evergreen garland dangle down over your mantel, these items can be a major fire hazard. Keep decorations away from the firebox, using the mantel or wall space. Never put any home décor near flames.

Trendy Holiday Décor

You can guarantee that every year green, red, blue and gold sparkles will be trending during the holidays. However, the trends do change annually, but the good news is, they are generally based on your current style.

“When it comes to decor trends this holiday season, there really seems to be something for everyone,” Dudich said. “Modern farmhouse is a very trendy style in everyday decor, and that's definitely carrying over to seasonal decor as well. Rustic, warm and natural elements are a few of the hallmarks to this holiday decor style, and I have to admit, it's one of my favorites. I love the simplicity this style can bring with just a few twinkle lights, a natural pine tree and wooden accents or ornaments.”

Even if you don’t have a specific style to your home, you can still incorporate trendy holiday décor.

Holiday Mantel Decorating Ideas

Once you’ve gathered your holiday décor, it’s time to start arranging it on your mantel. Dudich suggests starting above the mantel and working your way down.

"One of the things I always consider when decorating the mantel is balance. I really love finding a unique piece to place on or hang above the mantel,” Dudich said. “That's usually where I start with a fireplace decor design. That piece could be a large framed print, a round mirror wrapped in birch or your favorite metal, a vintage window or something else that will serve as a centerpiece and anchor.”

From there, you can start adding in some of those trendy holiday items to the mantel surface. Creating a cohesive look is important, so it’s a good idea to work with items in odd numbers and of different sizes.

“After finding that centerpiece, I build outward and often mirror the two sides,” Dudich continued. “Tall candles, Christmas trees, vases with birch stalks or treasured ornaments are a few of my favorite items to incorporate. Try using one of the newer garland styles or even layering garland for an extra punch this season.”

Family Holiday Decorations

When you think about the holidays, some of the most treasured decorative items are ones that don’t come from the store but are passed down from family members or handmade. These certainly deserve their own display on your decorative centerpiece;

I also have a few holiday decor items that I've purchased while on a special trip or on a fun outing with family, and those items just hold a little extra space in my decor-loving heart. Getting those items out and finding the right place for them in the new season is a favorite holiday moment of mine.”

It’s these items that truly brings the joy of the season into your home.
