DIY: 5 Lamps You Can Make At Home

  1. The Feather Lamp – kind of like an updated disco ball.

We really love the as-is version during the day but at night, the light really shines. The effect is a soft glow and the underneath color of the lamp is able to shine through. By taking a Japanese paper lamp as the starting point (and plenty of cut out leaves from craft tissue paper) apply the bits in a feather pattern.

  1. The Dedacahedron Lamp – This lamp, made with Lampan lamps, is a cool study in geometry.

The building process is straight forward: prepare 6 lamps with 4 holes and connect them together. Prepare 12 lamps and build two separate structures of 6 lamps then connect the two structures together.
3. The Plastic Spoon Chandelier – The plastic spoon lamp would be a cool mix of high and low art. The original has tiny holes punctured in the spoons to diffuse light – but even whole spoons would make a great effect.

The plastic spoon lamp might involve picnic products, but it is not at all hokey.

  1. The Twig Lamp – This twig lamp requires a lamp kit – and a trip to the backyard to pick out some great branches. The twig lamp is a cool example of easy naturalism. The Branch Lamp, which we spotted at the  showcase during New York Design Week, is made of an actual branch that fell during the tornado that struck NY last year.
  2. The Potted Plant Lamp – This lamp was inspired by outdoor lighting and has a great, simple profile that’s perfect inside or out. The potted plant lamp is all about simplicity – and a cool bulb.
