What Are the Ideal Wardrobe Measurements?

FT NEWS

The internal planning of a wardrobe revolves around a combination of hanging closets, drawers and shelves, which are used for keeping clothes, accessories, jewellery, shoes and so on. A good internal wardrobe layout is designed to make room for organised storage that ensures a clutter-free look. Before ordering a new wardrobe, it is essential to make a list of your requirements, which should include the number of drawers and shelves, and the amount of space required for hanging clothes, so that they can be incorporated within the design of the wardrobe. Here are the dimensions that will allow you to make efficient use of every inch of space in your wardrobe.

1. Hinged wardrobe
These wardrobes have their front doors fixed with simple hinges.

  • The standard depth of a hinged wardrobe is 24 inches. If your room is short on space, then you can opt for a depth of 22 inches; but remember, this depth is not adequate for hanging clothes.
  • The height of the wardrobe should either match the lintel-level of the doors, which is usually 84 inches, or you can create a full-height wardrobe by using the space from the floor to the ceiling.
  • The door-panel of a single-door or double-door wardrobe should not exceed 24 inches in width, otherwise there will be too much load on the hinges.

2. Sliding wardrobe
These wardrobes comprise of front panels that slide on tracks.

  • The depth of a sliding-door wardrobe should be 26 inches, which includes a running track of about 2 inches to allow free movement of the sliding panels and prevents clothes from getting stuck within them.
  • The minimum length (left to right) of a sliding-door wardrobe should be at least 7 feet, so that it can accommodate two door-panels of 3.5 feet each. This will allow you to access, one at a time, each of the 3.5-foot-wide openings of the wardrobe.
  • The width of each panel of a sliding wardrobe should not exceed 4 feet, otherwise the panels will be very heavy and will not slide easily.

3. Men’s wardrobe

  • Introduce two hanging rails for hanging shirts, like in this example, by dividing the wardrobe vertically into two equal sections. The minimum height of each section should be at least 40 inches.
  • There should be a minimum space of 3 inches between the rail and the top of the wardrobe so that there is enough space for the removing and placing back the hangers.
  • A wardrobe specially dedicated for coats should have a depth of 28-30 inches. Note that coats are wider than normal shirts; the sleeves of the coat should not get stuck within the door-panels of the wardrobe.

4. Women’s wardrobe

  • For hanging women’s clothing like gowns, kurtas or long dresses, the vertical clearance of the hanger section should be 66-72 inches. (Adjust the height according to your individual height and requirement).
  • Hang sarees or formal shirts in a smaller section with a height of 40 inches.
  • Introduce open shelves for keeping folded clothes. There should be a clearance of at least 12-15 inches between each shelf.

5. Child’s wardrobe

  • Install hangers by dividing the vertical length of the wardrobe into three sections of about 28 inches each. They are ideal for hanging clothes for kids and toddlers.
  • Introduce differently-sized drawers ranging between 6 and 15 inches to accommodate the child’s accessories, books and toys.
  • Go for open shelves that are 12 inches apart. They are useful for keeping shoes, folded clothes and towels.

6. Walk-in closet

  • If there are wardrobes on both (opposite) sides of the closet, then maintain a clearance of about 54-60 inches between the facing wardrobes so that even if one wardrobe door is open, there is still enough space to pass by.
  • If there is a wardrobe only on one side of the wall, then there should be a clearance of at least 3 feet in front of the wardrobe to comfortably access it.

7. Wardrobe drawers
Consider a set of drawers within your wardrobe, because they are very comfortable to use and access. The common depth for multi-purpose drawers is around 8 inches.

8. Shoe shelves

  • Allow a height of 6-7 inches for each shoe shelf. This is enough for keeping high-heeled sandals and shoes, flat shoes, running shoes or even shoes that are stored in boxes.
  • If you want to make provision for storing long boots, then go for a section with a height of around 18-20 inches.
  • The depth of shoe cabinets should be approximately 15 inches.
