The New Material in Town: Nano White

FT NEWS

Nano white crystallised glass is commonly known as nano white or nano white marble because it replicates the look and shine of premium quality white marble. This material is primarily imported from China and is a great way to add sophistication and impart a high-end luxurious look to the home’s decor. So, if you are looking for a trendy new material that could overcome the flaws of natural white marble, then here is all you need to know about nano white.

How is nano white manufactured?

  • Nano white is a type of crystallised glass that is factory-manufactured from a blend of 75 per cent silica and other natural minerals.
  • The silica-based mixture is poured into a mould that forms nano white slabs or tiles and is subjected to very high temperature and pressure for around 24–26 hours. Note that one side of nano white is glossy while the other side is rough.

What are the different varieties of nano white?
Nano white marble is available in three varieties, namely G3, G4 and G5.

  • The difference between these three varieties depends on the ease with which each of these slabs are cut. G5 nano white is of the best quality and is easier to cut than the G3 and G4 series of nano white, which were previously launched.
  • The colour of G5 nano white is milky white, while G3 and G4 have some black spots on them.

Why has nano white become so popular?

  • Nano white is a very hard, long-lasting and highly durable material that is hard to chip or break.
  • The milky white colour of nano white and its highly reflective surface make it a popular substitute for white marble.
  • Unlike natural white marble, nano white is very dense and non-porous, which makes it stain-, scratch- and acid- resistant. Therefore, nano white is easy to maintain.
  • Also, this material does not need to be sealed. It does not support the growth of bacteria, viruses, mould or mildew, which makes it one of the most hygienic materials available in the market.
  • Nano white is eco-friendly and recyclable, since it is made up of natural minerals.

What are the shortcomings of nano white?

  • Nano white is very hard, so only specialised contractors can work with this material and install it.
  • This material can be used as a tabletop but, unlike marble, no inlay work can be one on it because the base material is crystallised glass.
  • Nano white marble is expensive.
  • Another drawback of nano white is that the joint lines turn blackish over a period of time.
  • One should use only clear resins (glue) for installing nano white slabs or tiles, which do not turn yellowish over a period of time due to exposure to UV light.

What are the applications of nano white?

  • Nano white is widely used for countertops in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • It is also used on walls, as tiles for flooring or for the kitchen backsplash, as well as for tabletops, window sills and so on.

What is the cost of nano white?
The price of 16-millimetre thick nano white starts at ₹400 per square foot.
