Best jewellery trends of 2020

FT NEWS

This year has been a roller coaster ride for a lot of us. While it confined us to our respective homes, it exposed us to a virus that refuses to leave the planet. As we look forward to 2021 with a new hope, we also look back with all humility at the things 2020 taught us in the terms of life, sustainability and subtle fashion. The year saw everything meaningful take the centre stage and the same happened in the world of fashion - minimalism took over, even in the world of jewellery. Here's a look back at the trends that dominated the jewellery industry in 2020.

Precious stone jewellery

Since weddings were low key, most brides bought few pieces to dominate their trousseau instead of buying many jewellery pieces. Trends of 2020 were as dynamic as the year. So many things happened during the year, some good and some we must not mention at all. Those we can talk about are celebrations - festivals, weddings, engagements and festivals. The glamour of all these events was limited by the pandemic, to a cozy level. Gatherings and celebrations were more intimate and, so were the fashion statements"

Floral jewellery

Another trend that stood out this year was floral treatment of jewellery pieces as floral decorative patterns made a comeback. That's because these designs stand the test of time and have tons of grace that cannot be matched by modern designs.

Fusion jewellery

It is important to note that this year has been all about fusion. The most popular trend of 2020 has been Diamond Polki, which sees an infusion of Polki with diamond and gold, and the best part about this trend is, it lasts long. It has been here for years and it will continue through many future generations. The combination suits women of all age groups and can be clubbed with ethnic and western wear for creating a statement look as well.

Pearl jewellery

Pearls also saw a hike in demand this year, especially during the wedding season. It being affordable yet classy, became a choice of many brides who wore everything from gold embedded pearls to diamond encrusted ones.

It was just not pearls that saw an upswing in the market but also, silver jewellery which made a major comeback in oxidized form and it is expected to trend in 2021 as well.

Multi functional jewellery

Another highlight of the year has been interest in modular and functional pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. Imagine an earring that turns from day wear to party in a jiffy or a ring that can be just turned around to reveal its different avatars. The preference is for subtle and modern designs that give a professional appearance. Minimal yet stylish necklets (a fairly close-fitting and typically rigid ornament worn around the neck), earrings, rings and bracelets with modern elements, colour play through gemstones and enamel, floral motifs, asymmetric and geometrical shapes are in vogue. Diamond ear studs and necklets are popular, so are everyday rings.

Black jewellery

We have also seen a major revival of the quintessential black and it is reflecting in the wardrobe and jewellery preferences. A little mix of gems, a touch of colourful enamel, all enhancing gold is trending this season for those New Year vibes.

Gold chains

So you thought gold chains were a thing of the past? Well, they made a huge comeback this year as a lot of people were home and looking for a piece of jewellery that can be worn daily. And, gold chain fits the bill perfectly! Gold chains in all lengths were a norm this year.

Diamonds

Well, minimalist lifestyles didn't stop people from rewarding themselves with a diamond, and diamond jewellery remained popular this year, like always. A trend that became really big in 2020, that of light diamond jewellery. "Although a diamond solitaire engagement ring is always a classic look, a diamond tennis ring is the new trending ring. A lot of couples all over the world chose tennis rings to propose to each other. These are classy and feature full circle diamonds.

Charms

Charm bracelets which carry personal jewelled ornaments such as decorative pendants or trinkets became a staple this year thanks to online shopping during quarantine and the fact that they are completely customisable and interchangeable.
