Jeans are not the first thing you’d associate fashion icon Sonam Kapoor Ahuja with. Bespoke ballgowns, red carpet-worthy couture and floaty dresses are her standard MO. Even when you scroll deep into her Instagram feed, you’ll find more pantsuits than mom jeans in there (just like her closet, we’d venture a guess). And are you more likely to spot her in an oversized denim jacket than a high-waisted bootcut? Resounding yes. But that’s not to say that actor is immune to the charms of the true-blue wardrobe classic that is a good ol’ pair of jeans.

In fact, she was spotted in cropped flares worn with a white shirt and cardigan during her recent getaway to Gleneagles in Scotland. During her quarantine in her Delhi home, she was also seen in an ivory Péro dress worn over a pair of comfy jeans and kolhapuris. The dress-over-jeans combination is one she has long favoured—often wearing distressed slim fits with striped dresses and tunics at airports or on casual off-duty days. But if you are looking to dress up a slogan tee, then borrow from Kapoor Ahuja’s styling and team it with a pretty blazer and cropped flares. Oversized glasses for nerdy cool and solitaires for understated luxe, optional.

The fashion enthusiast is partial to the combination of skinny black and grey washes with chambray shirts, often finished with her signature chunky silver jewellery. She’s also partial to Bhaane (no surprises there), like when she wore retro tapered jeans from the label with a statement sleeve tee for a Cali-cool look during her LA trip. The merit of the classic jeans-and-white shirt pairing is not lost on her either. Case in point: the exaggerated white shirt tucked into baggy cuffed jeans the actor wore at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2018. But it’s not all low-key in this closet. If someone can give jeans an haute update, it has be the star. Like the time she wore head-to-toe denim with a pant suit and matching top, flourished with look-at-me pearl accessories.
