Misha Nonoo on her capsule wardrobe approach to fashion and the Meghan Markle approved white shirt

When it comes to the royals, fashion historians and insiders will tell you that their clothing choices are often made with great thought. Queen Elizabeth II is known to love colour to stand out in the crowd; Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, re-wears her clothes, changing up a few details, both out of practicality and also to deflect attention away from her wardrobe; and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, makes sustainable choices, often supporting women-led brands.

Case in point, the very aptly named ‘Husband’ shirt that she wore, very presciently, when she attended the Invictus Games with Harry, on their first ever public outing. The designer behind that crisp cotton shirt is the Bahrain-born, London-raised, Paris-educated Misha Nonoo, who may be a close friend of the couple, but has also been recognised in the Forbes 30 under 30, and by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, for which she was a finalist in 2013.

For Nonoo, the pandemic and the resulting conversations in the fashion industry are just putting into the spotlight the choices she made for her own business a few years earlier. With sustainability and a pragmatic approach to fashion, front of mind, Nonoo, was one of the first to go ‘phygital’ with an Instagram show five years ago, opt for DTC (direct to consumer) four years ago, and three years ago, switched to on-demand in manufacturing, that is, items are only put into production post orders, preventing any surplus inventory, and minimising waste.

But back to the Meghan-approved Husband Shirt, just one of the basics in Nonoo’s capsule wardrobe approach to fashion. Her latest collaboration with accessories brand Fry Power allows you to customise the Husband Shirt with jewelled studs, continuing Nonoo’s narrative of the importance of elevated details in your wardrobe.
