CHANEL OPENS THE CHICEST APRÈS SKI DESTINATION IN ASPEN

When Chanel showed its fall 2019 collection in March—the final one designed by the late, great maestro Karl Lagerfeld—it was against the hushed backdrop of a snowy alpine lodge, the Chanel Gardenia.

Models like Cara Delevingne, Mariacarla Boscono, Kaia Gerber, and even the actress Penélope Cruz, a grown-up snow angel in tiers of airy white layers, strode across a powdery expanse of runway in fair isle knit tops, skirts, and dresses; colorful puffy down parkas; slouchy tweed ensembles; and cozy shearling fleeced boots that would seem appropriate for a mountainous retreat and an urban holiday alike.

It’s fitting, then, that today Chanel is opening the doors to a pop-up boutique in Aspen. The 1,960-square-foot space is situated at the base of the Elk Mountains, and in addition to pieces from the aforementioned fall 2019 collection, the store will offer items from the cruise 2019 collections (the first by Virginie Viard, Lagerfeld’s successor as artistic director), shoes, handbags, costume and fine jewelry, watches, and fragrance and beauty.

Mirrored columns nod to the mirrored staircase of the French brand’s 31 rue Cambon flagship in Paris, while additional columns are covered in black velvet with matelassé, much like the fashion house’s signature quilting. A long black carpet is emblazoned with the Chanel logo, and beige lounge benches in another area evoke the sofa in Mademoiselle Chanel’s Parisian apartment.

The pop-up will be open through January 21, 2020, for those whose idea of après ski leans more toward retail than spiked hot cocoa.
