DESIGNER APPROVED WAYS TO DECORATE WITH BROWN

We'll admit that brown is probably not your idea of decorating with color, but it's time to rethink your view, as the shade is suitable for just about any design style. Pair brown with navy to give a room a cozy feel or incorporate it into a design scheme with pale blue and beige for a more subdued look. Regardless of where your design sensibilities lie, brown color schemes are perfect for boosting a room's style factor.

NAVY BLUE, BEIGE, AND CHESTNUT BROWN

"Brown grounds our schemes and gives those more gravitas–especially when we are using predominantly light colors. In this bedroom, though, the predominant colors are dark–navy blue, deep chestnut browns, and dark beiges, and its highlights of white that provide the contrasting color. This is a small, dark room–it faces the interior courtyard of a building–so instead of trying to fight the architecture with a light palette, we embraced the natural darkness of the room by limiting the palette to two rich colors. The result, we think, is a cozy, cocoon-like little bedroom."

BLACK AND BROWN

"When black meets brown: we consider both hues neutrals that work well together. In this dining room, the black not only creates more drama against the furniture, but black also brings out the beautiful and varied shades of honey and cognac found in the furniture and the rug."

PURPLE, GOLD, AND EARTHY BROWN

"Most people think of brown as a color that has seen its day. However, when mixed with rich, warm colors, like the purple and gold tones in this study that I designed, it creates a cozy, moody, and luxurious timeless escape from the world at large. The jewel tones give off a Moroccan vibe while the earthy browns ground the room. They are a perfect complement to each other!"

CHOCOLATE BROWN, CREAM, AND ORANGE

"I have always loved the combination of a really dark chocolate brown with cream and orange. The contrast of cream on brown is a warmer, more sophisticated take on a black and white story and adding an accent of orange in a beautiful burnt or bright hue really brings life and glamour to the mix."

BROWN, PALE BLUE, AND BEIGE

"The color brown is a wonderful neutral that can both carry or accent a room design. From deep rich chocolate to soft, muted taupe, brown is the great equalizer and goes with everything. We often pair our brown schemes with a pale blue and tones of beige, as they complement each other so well."

BURGUNDY AND WALNUT BROWN

"Why not add some burgundy to spice up the brown in a room? We love how well these colors complement one another and in this bachelor’s kitchen, the burgundy leather of the Cab Cassina chairs liven up the expanse of walnut cabinets without feeling feminine. It’s a great way to bring color into a room that is meant to feel masculine."

BLUE, ORANGE, YELLOW, AND BROWN

"In order to offset the pervasive earth-tone browns of the wood shingles, carved furniture, and glazed and terra cotta tiles in the Great Room of this natural biome-inspired Los Angeles home, we infused the space with bright pops of blues, oranges, and yellows. These saturated colors help counterbalance the organic leanings of the room by providing landing spots for your eye as you take in the space’s varied textures, shapes, and patterns."

BROWN, WHITE, AND NAVY

"What’s more classic than a crisp white button down shirt, denim that fits you to a tee, a navy cashmere cardigan thrown effortlessly around your neck and perfectly worn, rich leather boots? Translate this style into interiors and the immediate result is a room that exudes fresh and timeless chicness. Giving credit to Ralph Lauren for making this color combo as American as apple pie, it’s a forever palette, and my personal go-to when working on our sophisticated, coastal retreats."

NAVY BLUE AND BROWN

"Buttery brown leather is always a beautiful contrast and complement to my favorite shade of navy blue. I love how it feels refined and rustic at once, or when paired with tailored textiles, it can take on a classic, chic feel. I also love how chestnut brown can add an element of surprise to a crisp, clean space, making it feel layered and lived in."
